A diet high in omega-3 fatty acid that has many health benefits, especially for smokers in overcoming the damage to blood vessels. Thus the results of recent research conducted by scientists from Greece.
In his research, the scientists examined the extent of change experienced by study participants who received oral treatment (given two grams of omega-3 fatty acid) daily for four weeks of the arterial health of smokers.
The results showed that short-term treatment with fish oil may improve arterial stiffness and minimize damage to arterial elasticity. Omega-3 fatty acids are commonly found in fatty fish and vegetable oils.
"These findings suggest that omega-3 fatty acids can inhibit the harmful effects of smoking on arterial function, which is an independent marker of cardiovascular risk," said Gerasimos Siasos cardiologist at the University of Athens Medical School.
Siasos further added, upon the recommendation of the American Heart Association, someone with no history of coronary heart disease still have to eat different kinds of fish (rich in omega-3) at least twice per week.
"World Heart Federation to encourage all smokers to stop their bad habits," said Kathryn Taubert, the study's lead researcher.
"The only way to protect your body from the harmful effects of tobacco is to stop smoking. We encourage everyone, both smokers and nonsmokers, to undergo a healthy diet, including foods rich in omega-3," he added.
These findings were presented at the World Congress of Cardiology in Dubai. Previous research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids can also help stop the spread of cancer, brain educate, treat diabetes and prevent heart problems in low birth weight infants.
