There is a classic joke that says, meat goats for Eid so that low cholesterol can be made safe for the heart. How, before being slaughtered goats were fed simvastatin tablet which is a cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Because only a joke, this way did not make cholesterol-free goat meat because of simvastatin only works on humans. But this joke illustrates how humans are obsessed with a practical way, which rely on cholesterol-lowering drugs than to reduce the consumption of goat meat.

In fact, many people rely too much on medication to control his cholesterol. However, if they are not supported and abstain from certain foods diet, cholesterol medication continuously can cause unexpected side effects.

"Cholesterol Drugs when used continuously, its effectiveness will be diminished. Side effects can also cause muscle pain, although it is rather rare," said Dr. Antonia Anna Lukito, SpJP-Fika, a cardiologist from Siloam Hospital Lippo detikHealth when contacted on Wednesday ( 08/08/2012).

The best solution to control cholesterol levels, according to Dr. Antonia is to limit foods that contain cholesterol, and that stimulates the liver to produce cholesterol. An example is the offal, squid, fried foods.

Exercise is also one of prevention strategies that can be done so that blood cholesterol levels are not excessive. Medication is a last resort if cholesterol levels are already high and should be lowered because of the risk affect the heart.

If want to take medicine regularly, it should not be consumed cholesterol-lowering drugs but the drugs antioxidant supplements. Although it does not reduce levels of bad cholesterol, these drugs can minimize the effects of these supplements bad.

"Supplements of antioxidants can fight free radicals. Most cases of excess cholesterol will intensify when reacting with free radicals, and form plaque that can clog blood vessels," added Dr Djoko Maryono, DSPP, DSJP, FIHA, FACC, a cardiologist from Pondok Indah Hospital .
